We are compiling an ongoing
chronology of British grassroots feminist history from 1980 to the present day, to be made accessible through the FAF website.
We decided to start our research in 1980 to complement and extend already existing digital time-lines of the Women's Liberation Movement published by the Feminist Archive North and The Women's Library, Glasgow.
This period is also significant as it is seen as the demise of the second wave and the advent of 'post-feminism'- we hope to prove this is a misconception and that feminist activism is strong and still happening; although its agendas, aesthetics, targets and goals may have significantly changed. This project is an attempt to uncover what the possible 'third wave of feminism' looks like- and to analyse its strengths, limitations and challenges. Or maybe to show that the idea of 'waves' is a little rubbish, and that grassroots feminism continues, ruptures and invents as a matter of course!
This will be a multi-media timeline, with images, down-loadable articles and links. We are proud of our feminist history, especially the actions, ideas and words of our working class, multi-ethnic, queer, disabled comrades from yesteryear and now! Of course, this chronology is just a snatch: mapping a few moments of a broader history and offering you a handful of examples to inform, inspire and galvanise.
