The Feminist Free School will be a two day programme of
workshops to
be held on October 4-5 at The Zion Arts Centre in Manchester. The
event draws on the organisational skills, experiences and expertise of
a diverse group of feminists, including established and emerging
academics, community educators and grassroots activists. The Free
School aims to provide a free and accessible space for people to
congregate, discuss, explore and learn about a variety of feminist
topics.
The Free School aims to bridge gaps between academic and
activist spheres through the development of a community education
initiative that unites traditionally academic topics alongside
practical skills training. Furthermore, the event will also produce
space for participants to build relationships, networks and confidence
across academic and activist social groups, to inspire future
community building within contemporary British feminism.
Currently annual national British feminist events can reproduce a formal and
disengaged format centred on 'traditional' feminist issues. However,
the Free School emphasises the co-creation of an informal, engaged,
critical and reflective learning space that will both inspire and
empower participants from a wide range of feminisms, experiences and
backgrounds.
The Free School is aimed at anyone interested in engaging with
feminist debates within an informal learning atmosphere, as well as
those who wish to learn new skills and community involvement
techniques to apply to the wider community engaged with feminism and
gender issues.
